3/8: Huxford and Russell Win Medals In Atlantic City
Seniors Zach Huxford and Derrik Russell capped their seasons, and careers, by earning medals at the this weekend's 2009 NJSIAA Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Comepting at 119 pounds, Huxford picked up three victories to finish in 8th place. Huxford won his opening round bout by making quick work of North Bergen's Jorge Reyes with a pin in 1:10. After dropping a 9-3 decision to eventual runner-up Joe Duca of Paulsboro, Huxford put together back to back wins in the wrestleback bracket to clinch a medal.
For the season, Huxford finished up with a 29-7 record. He was a 4th place finisher at the Beast of the East Tournament, a District 21 champion, and a 3rd place finisher in the Region to go along with his state medal. He ends his career at Jackson with a 60-16 record.
Wrestling in the loaded 130 pound bracket, Russell majored Roxbury's CJ Caserta, 11-0, to advance into the pre-quarters. In that round he was decisioned, 6-4, by top-seeded Kenny Knapp of Brearley, the eventual 3rd place finisher and a three-time state placer. Russell would go on to win his next three bouts in the wrestleback bracket before dropping another decision to Knapp in the wrestleback semis. In the 5th place matchup, Russell was edged, 3-2, by Washington Township's Anthony Curcio, a state runner-up last season.
Russell finishes the 2009 season with a 28-8 record, a District 21 championship, and a 3rd place medal from the Region 6 Tournament. He ends an outstanding career with the Jags with a final record of 114-25. His career highlights include three District championships, a Region 6 championship, four Region 6 medals, and three State medals.

2/21: Five Win Titles, Jags Finish 2nd as a Team at Districts
Zach Huxford (119), BJ Young (125), Derrik Russell (130), Doug Hamann (140), and Tyler Wilton (145) all won individual titles, but it wasn't enough for Jackson as they had their streak of eleven straight District Team Titles snapped by Howell at this year's District 21 Tournament.
In addition to Jackson's five individual champs, juniors Matt Kimball (171) and Devin Biscaha (152) placed 2nd and seniors Josh Baker (135) and Justin Georgiano (215) finished 3rd.
The Jags five champs have byes into Friday night's quarterfinals of the Region 6 Tournament. Kimball, Baker, and Georgiano will bin action in Tuesday night's opening round at the Ritacco. Kimball will match up against Southern's Mike Chiapetta (who he has split a pair of matches with this season), Biscaha takes on Keansburg's Steve Burns, Baker draws the Rams' Jason Walters, and Georgiano will face Brick's Kevin Watson.
